Like Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann speaks for a segment of the center-right electorate that has been talked down to or talked over by the establishment elements of the GOP. In a crowded Republican presidential field, Bachmannâs brand of faith-based and tea party-infused politics could play well in Iowa and South Carolina. Being a woman with a solid media presence doesnât hurt either.
The 2012 GOP presidential nomination process is likely to be a long, drawn-out affair, and someone who stands out from the crowd like Bachmann could gain momentum early, especially if Sarah Palin does not throw her hat into the ring. That said, if Bachmann ultimately wins the GOP presidential nomination, the Republican Party is at risk for a bigger electoral defeat than it experienced in 2008.
