This is serious astro-turfing. Two Democratic strategists, Craig Varoga and George Rakis, have created a number of 527s to funnel big labor union money into anti-tea party propaganda in states where the Tea Party movement is strong. One of their tools is the website theteapartyisover.org, which proclaims “This movement is a fad.” While this practice is completely legal, Paul Ryan, legal counsel at the Campaign Legal Center, says: “It’s not illegal but it is, I think, dishonest on the part of the organizations. And there’s a reason they do it: they know voters don’t like outsiders coming in to sway the vote.”
